Mayor Sciarra Appoints Katie Deppen as Central Services Director
NORTHAMPTON – Today, following an extensive search, Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra announced the appointment of Katie Deppen, the city’s current Superintendent of Engineering in the Department of Public Works, as Northampton’s next Central Services Director, the first woman ever to hold this position. If confirmed, Ms. Deppen will fill the position being vacated by current Director Pat McCarthy, who is retiring in mid-July.
“I am happy to promote Katie to the level of Director to fill this essential role in city operations,” said Mayor Sciarra. “Katie brings a record of leadership, technical skill, and thoughtful project management to the job. Her appointment reflects the city’s commitment to recognizing the talent and dedication of our internal candidates.”
The Central Services Department manages and oversees grounds, maintenance, heating/cooling, plumbing, electrical, security, fire detection/protection, custodial, renovations, and construction operations for city and school buildings. Central Services is also responsible for the maintenance and operation of multiple parking lots, the parking meter system, and two parking garages. Additionally, the department manages the internal municipal mail delivery and processing program.
Ms. Deppen joined the City of Northampton in 2022 as Facilities Project Coordinator in Central Services before moving to her current role with the Department of Public Works. She brings to the position a wide range of experience in capital planning, infrastructure, and facilities management, including prior leadership roles in professional and collegiate sports facility operations for the NFL, the NCAA, and international venues. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Vermont and maintains certifications in public contracting, construction supervision, and project management.
“I am truly honored to have the opportunity to continue serving the City of Northampton in this new role,” said Ms. Deppen. “I have deep respect for the dedicated staff in every department who work to serve our community each day. I’m excited to collaborate with colleagues across the city as we continue to care for the facilities and spaces that support the people who live, work, and learn here.”
Mayor Sciarra will submit her appointment to the City Council for confirmation in accordance with the Northampton Charter, Article 2, § 2-10. It will appear on the agenda for the City Council meeting on July 10, 2025 for referral. Ms. Deppen has returned to the Central Services Department as of June 16 to allow for a smooth transition with Director McCarthy ahead of his retirement.
