LETTER FROM CITY COUNCILOR MARIANNE LABARGE, WARD 6: Dear Residents of Ward 6 and In The City:
A week ago I heard from many residents on the proposed changes to zoning ordinances that have come before City Council. Being a City Councilor and hearing your concerns in your emails was very helpful to me, on making my decision to vote for the changes. Last week we voted on a zoning change that would allow for 2-family homes by right throughout Northampton as well as to allow 2 single-family homes on a single lot in the Urban Residential B and C zones. The most important factor here is that any construction would still need to meet design standards including the setbacks and open space.
I have heard for so many years now, from so many residents from ward 6 and throughout the city about the struggle to buy a home here, the potential impact in their neighborhoods, and about the high cost of homes in Northampton. The zoning that has come forth will hopefully bring in more housing that is more affordable and that helps to meet the Northampton Climate Goals. The provisions for 2 family homes by right will be throughout Northampton. The provisions of 2 units on a single lot will be in urban residential B and district C.
The amendment that was added on would limit the size of the second structure to 1800 square feet or less. Remember that 1800 square feet is approximately the size of the average single family home in Northampton.

20.181 An Ordinance Relative to Affordable Housing (350-6.12)
For some time in our City it has been very difficult to locate developers to build affordable housing in the City of Northampton. This is an ordinance relative to affordable housing that will be presented upon the recommendation of our Mayor and Planning and Sustainability. There will be a Special Joint Meeting of Mayor Narkewicz and the City Council. The Police Review Commission will present their final report at this meeting.+ The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at 6 p.m. You can access the Policing Review Commission’s final report here.
